The American Girl franchise was first released in 1986 by the Pleasant Company, which later became a subsidiary of Mattel in 1998. The American Girl dolls portrayed characters with a variety of ethnicities and historically-based backgrounds. The company has also sold many accompanying books that helped elaborate on each doll’s stories which are inspired by the American history. It is still unknown if the live-action will be featuring one or multiple characters from the franchise because further details on film’s plot is being kept under wraps

This project will be Mattel’s third film in development this year. The toy company is also currently busy working with Warner Bros. Pictures on the productions of two live-action films: Barbie and Hot Wheels.

In 2004, Julia Robert’s Red Om Production company was the first one to adapt the doll brand into a TV movie titled Samantha: An American Girl Holiday which starred AnnaSophia Robb. Due to its success, it was followed by two TV movies and one theatrical film Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, led by Abigail Breslin.
