ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to sit in on the Marvel Games Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, which included a look at a new demo highlighting Marvel’s Avengers gameplay with the game’s voice cast and creators from Marvel Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics in attendance. You can check out a brief description of the gameplay we saw during the panel below that serves as a prologue to the game!

The gameplay begins with footage from the first Marvel’s Avengers trailer as our heroes head towards a bridge explosion. Players will get the opportunity to explore the respective skills, powers, and personalities of each character during this portion of the game. Thor is up first in the demo, blasting enemies and striking them multiple times with his hammer. Thor can also send the hammer flying when he needs to blast away an enemy or clear some rubble. For each character during a battle, the camera angle adjusts with the movement, including zooming in up close on a few hits. Thor shows off lightning combo hits and more hammer strikes, as well as the ability to lift up multiple enemies into the air and blast them away.
Iron Man shows up to assist, and gameplay switches over to Tony as he takes on soldiers that are wearing jetpacks. While in the air, Iron Man is able to avoid enemy attacks and missiles, lock onto his targets, maneuver through more rubble, and communicate with the other Avengers before he lands on the ground. The gameplay reveals that Iron Man can fight while grounded as well as in the air, including dodging attacks from the enemy as he responds with a few of his own including the use of repulsor blasts.
After Iron Man, Black Widow and Bruce Banner show up in the Quad-Jet. Bruce Hulks out, immediately grabbing a soldier and tossing them around and smashing them into the ground (much to the delight of the Hall H crowd). With Hulk’s enormous size, players can easily smash through the rubble, destroy cars, and create weapons out of the debris. The big guy is also able to attack in mid-air, resulting in a ground-and-pound effect.
The gameplay switches to Captain America on the helicarrier, who is mainly shown utilizing his shield to attack the guards charging at him as well as blocking their attacks. The footage shows a bit of Cap’s hand-to-hand combat skills, including grabbing one of the soldiers and slamming him into the ground. After a glimpse of Kamala Khan on the helicarrier, the Taskmaster appears on the bridge.
Black Widow attacks Taskmaster as she punches him and drives him into the debris. The two fight with Black Widow showing off her melee attacks. She shoots at Taskmaster, who is able to use a shield to defend himself and carries a flaming sword. The one-on-one fight lasts for a bit, leading to Black Widow activating her camo cloak and sneaking behind Taskmaster (all the while taunting each other) to attack him with a barrage of punches, including striking him with her widow’s bite. For a moment, it appears as though Black Widow has won as she deactivates Taskmaster’s missiles, but he seems more concerned with how the rest of the world will react to the Avengers after their heroes have failed them.
Right after, the helicarrier explodes with Captain America supposedly still onboard, with Tony and Thor too late to reach him as the helicarrier crashes into the water. Once the gameplay is over, the rest of the demo reveals the same footage from the trailer that was previously released.
