Exclusive: Naomie Harris & Barry Jenkins Want a Moneypenny Movie!

Over the weekend, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with actor Naomie Harris about her role in Screen Gems’ Black and Blue, out on Friday. While we’ll have the best bits from those interviews soon, we asked Harris about why her character Eve Moneypenny isn’t becoming the new 007. After all, we did see her in action in Skyfall, and she’s plays a pretty bad-ass police officer in Black and Blue. Turns out she had a huge bombshell to drop…

“Actually, Barry Jenkins, the director of ‘Moonlight,’ he always said that he wanted to do a Moneypenny spin-off, so maybe…” stated Harris.

After that tease, we had to ask whether she’d had a chance to get Jenkins together with EON Productions, who is in charge of all things Bond, and she said, “I did. I got him together with Barbara [Broccoli], and they had a little discussion, but nothing’s happened so far, but you never know.”

If anyone can get the first ever Bond spin-off happening, maybe it’s Barry Jenkins, who went from the Oscar-winning Best Picture Moonlight (for which Harris received an Oscar nomination) to last year’s If Beale Street Could Talk (for which Regina King from HBO’s Watchmen won an Oscar.) A female-centric Bond spinoff has been something Broccoli has had her sights on for a long while, with both Halle Berry’s Jinx and Michelle Yeoh’s Wai Lin both targeted for solo films at one point.

Harris currently in talks to play Shriek in Andy Serkis’ Venom 2, although she’s still in negotiation.

“I’m in discussions at the moment, because I love the franchise, and I worked with Andy Serkis before, twice now, and Woody Harrelson at the very start of my career*, so I love those guys, and I’d love to work with them, but let’s see what happens,” Harris told us.

Apparently, she hasn’t had a chance to speak with her Black and Blue co-star Tyrese Gibson about his own experiences in Sony’s 2020 release Morbius yet.
