Just over a month after landing Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) to lead the psychological horror film, Scott Cooper’s A Head Full of Ghosts has been acquired by STXfilms in a seven-figure deal, according to Deadline.

The studio plans to distribute it in the United States and the United Kingdom in a similar fashion to its other recently acquired project Gunpowder Milkshake, where they are partnering with Latin America’s Sun, Canada’s Elevation and Benelux’s The Searchers to distribute the film in those markets.
The film, which is being rewritten and directed by Cooper (Hostiles), follows Meredith “Merry” Barrett, a 23-year-old woman who recounts to a journalist the horrifying events that saw her family publicly torn apart 20 years ago by her sister’s bizarre actions that blur the lines between schizophrenia and demonic possession. It’s based on the 2015 novel of the same by Paul Tremblay, which won the Bram Stoker Award for Novel the same year.

Qualley found her breakout roles on the small screen with HBO’s acclaimed mystery drama The Leftovers and FX’s Emmy-nominated Fosse/Verdon while seeing success on the big screen with films including Shane Black’s The Nice Guys and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Cooper broke out in 2009 with his writing and directorial debut Crazy Heart, which won two Oscars including Best Actor and Best Original Song, and went on to direct Christian Bale twice in the 2013 action-thriller Out of the Furnace and 2017 western Hostiles, as well as Johnny Depp in the crime biopic Black Mass. His next film is the upcoming horror pic Antlers, which was recently pulled from Disney’s release calendar amidst global theater shutdowns.
