Alejandro Iñárritu Finds Next Directorial Project

It’s been five years since audiences were last graced with the keen eye of eight-time Oscar winner Alejandro Iñárritu (The Revenant) on the big screen and now it appears that 56-year-old writer/director has begun working on an unknown new feature, according to The Film Stage.

The director was recently seen scouting locations and doing camera tests in Mexico City, including Chapultepec Castle in the historic center fo the city, with cinematographer Bradford Young (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and multiple cast members dressed in ’90s outfits alongside cardboard cutouts of politicians Carlos Salinas de Gortari and José López Portillo.

Discussing Film also reports that production designer Patrice Vermette, who frequently works with Denis Villeneuve, including on his upcoming Dune adaptation, and that production was originally slated to begin in April, but that details on the plot, cast or even if shooting has been shut down due to the global pandemic.

Iñárritu, whose last project was the virtual reality short film Carne y Arena, which was awarded the first Special Achievement Academy Award in over 20 years by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is best known for directing the Best Picture winner Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), as well as the seven-nominated Babel, the double-nominated Biutiful and the Leonardo DiCaprio-led The Revenant, which won the actor his first Oscar and was nominated for 11 other Oscars, winning Best Director and Best Cinematography.
