Nearly a year after the streaming platform gave the project the official greenlight, Disney+’s series adaptation of R.L. The horror/comedy anthology, based on the best-selling BOOM! Studios graphic novel series from iconic children’s writer R.L. Stine (Goosebumps), was created by Seth Grahame-Smith, who has a history of moving between horror and comedy as author of the bestselling novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and screenwriter of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, The Lego Batman Movie and The Saint for director Dexter Fletcher and star Chris Pine.
The novels center on middle school kids coming across a variety of terrors, akin to Stine’s iconic Goosebumps franchise, with the first seeing a group of kids learning about a terrifying creature and a gateway to a horrifying dimension lurking in their school while the second deals with two Martians crash-landing on Earth and hijacking two kid’s bodies and the third focusing on two siblings joining their uncle on a scientific expedition to a remote island, only to come across a deadly beast.
