Pixar is looking for an actress that can authentically portray a transgender girl.
According to a new casting call, Disney’s celebrated animation studio will feature its first trans character in an upcoming animated project. While not much is known about the character, we know that her name is Jess and that she’s 14-years-old. She’s described as being a reliable friend that is funny and compassionate as well.

The casting search reads as follows:
Pixar is casting a youth voice-over role for an upcoming animated project.
The character, Jess, is a 14-year-old transgender girl. She’s compassionate, funny, and always has your back.
We’re looking for actresses 12-17 years old who:
– Are enthusiastic, outgoing, funny, and energetic
– Feel comfortable acting in front of a microphone
– Can authentically portray a 14-year-old transgender girl

According to the San Francisco Trans March, they were sent the casting call by the casting director, and Pixar is reaching out to other trans organizations as well to make sure their portrayal is authentic.

Disney recently cast its first transgender voice actor, Patti Harrison, in Raya and the Last Dragon. Meanwhile, Pixar took a step forward in LGBT representation by having its first gay character in Onward. Lena Waithe played the cyclops cop in that film, and Pixar is continuing its authentic voice-over casting methods here as well.
