Speaking to Empire in a recent interview, Cumberbatch likened the scope of the sequel to that of the recently released Spider-Man: No Way Home, stating that the levels of ambition in the film are right up there with Spider-Man in terms of what they’re trying to accomplish.
“It’s a big, big movie,” said Cumberbatch. “It’s going to be an absolute riot. And if it brings off the level of ambition it’s got, we’re going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I’ll put my flag in the sand.”
Alongside the interview, a handful of new stills from the film were released, mostly highlighting Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, but also teasing the introduction of America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cumberbatch noted that the film has “a lot of reckoning,” and that the character of Doctor Strange will learn more about himself than he has in any past film.
“There’s a lot of reckoning,” Cumberbatch said. “And a lot of self-discovery. Strange is almost a stranger to himself before this film unfolds and reveals what, essentially, is in his nature, that he then has to either confront or resist or fall into or become.” The answers to the questions of who Strange really is, won’t have easy answers. “There are some very bold ideas, and some extraordinary tests of Strange and encounters. There are some very unexpected conclusions.”

Described as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe horror film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the return of Cumberbatch as he reprises his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time the Sorcerer Supreme will be joined by Scarlet Witch, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, who is coming off from the critical success of WandaVision. The sequel is expected to tie into the events from WandaVision, Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The sequel will also feature MCU alums Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams, who are reprising their roles as Karl Mordo, Wong, and Dr. Christine Palmer, respectively. It will also feature the introduction of the live-action debut of fan-favorite Marvel hero America Chavez, who will be portrayed by newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club).
The film is directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy) from a script written by Emmy-winning scribe Michael Waldron (Loki). It is executive produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
