Danny DeVito is no stranger to acting in a Batman film, having played the Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992 film Batman Returns. With Colin Farrell now donning the role of the iconic villain in The Batman, DeVito has given his fellow actor his stamp of approval.

“Yes, I did. I thought Colin did a great job,” DeVito said when asked if he had seen Farrell’s take on the character in a recent interview with The Wrap. “Certainly a different milieu. I think it was a more edgy, serious, gangster-y Batman. Of course, there’s three Italians who are bad guys in it, the Falcones [laughs]. But I feel like in terms of the performances, I thought Colin – who is a good buddy of mine – I think he did a great job in that. You take your hat off to anybody who sits in the makeup chair that long. I did it with The Penguin and loved it.”
While DeVito said that he enjoyed the recent Matt Reeves film, he still prefers the more whimsical and “operatic” feel of Burton.
“My feeling of comparing the two movies, I’m like a Tim Burton fan,” said Devito. “I like the whimsical, the operatic, the disaffected Pee-wee Herman throws me off a bridge [laughs]. That makes me smile. So it’s a different situation, but I did watch the movie.”

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. The superhero film saw Robert Pattinson don the cowl of the Dark Knight. Reeves is also currently developing an HBO Max series set within the film’s universe called The Penguin, which will star Farrell.
