According to Deadline, Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey has signed on for one of the leading roles in Skydance’s forthcoming sports drama film titled Dallas Sting. It is inspired by the true story of how a soccer team consisting of Dallas high school girls beat the odds by winning against other experienced teams in China. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director Kari Skogland is currently attached to direct the underdog film, which is written by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch.

McConaughey is set to portray the role of Coach Bill Kinder, who leads the rag-tag group of Texan teens toward a Rocky-esque destiny — despite not having any experience in coaching the sport.
In 1984, China invited America’s U.S. Soccer team to the first world championship, which was a big step for international relations. However, the only problem is the country didn’t have a women’s soccer team who could represent the United States. Because of this, they enlisted a group of Dallas high school girls through a nationwide search.
Dallas Sting is being developed by Skydance and Berlanti Schechter Productions. It will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robbie Rogers, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger. Production is expected to begin sometime this fall in New Orleans.

McConaughey isn’t a stranger to the sports genre, as he previously starred in D.J. Caruso’s Two for the Money and McG’s We Are Marshall. His notable film credits include Dazed and Confused, A Time to Kill, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Dallas Buyers Club.
