Is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Part of the MCU Canon?

With recent developments in Secret Invasion, many viewers are wondering “Is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. part of the MCU canon?” Here’s the need-to-know info about whether or not Agents of Shield is now considered canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Is the Agents of Shield ABC show part of the MCU?

The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not explicitly part of the MCU.

At the time of writing, recent MCU movies and TV shows have not acknowledged the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. storyline. While some characters have appeared in cameo roles, their involvement hasn’t been substantial enough to form a clear canonical link.

Rather than tying the show and movies together, the minor cameos are more of a nod towards a fan-favorite character, almost acting as a way to give closure to diehard Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans.

For now, it’s best to think of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a fun spin-off that has no bearing on the events of the MCU.

Will the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. return?

Some Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters are expected to pop up in cameo spots during upcoming TV shows and movies. However, the TV show itself is not expected to return.

With the multiverse, there are endless possibilities for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters to appear again. With seven seasons under its belt, the show built up a passionate fanbase that would surely love to see familiar faces featured in a more substantial way.

Perhaps Secret Wars will provide the opportunity for Phil Coulson, Daisy Johnson, Leo Fitz, and Melinda May to appear again for one final fight. For now, all we can do is speculate and hope with our fingers crossed.
