Colman Domingo Set to Lead & Direct Nat King Cole Biopic

It’s been a busy day for Colman Domingo, as the star will also be leading and directing a biopic based on the iconic singer Nat King Cole.

Variety has reported that Domingo also co-wrote the script for the film, which the actor said he had been working on for a while. At the moment, it’s unclear what time period the movie will take place in. This also isn’t Domingo’s first experience with a project involving Nat King Cole, as he co-wrote the play Lights Out: Nat ‘King’ Cole.

“I’ve been working on it quietly for a few years,” Domingo said on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast. “It’s something I’m looking forward to putting together with some great partners.”

Nat King Cole was a legendary singer, actor, and jazz pianist in the mid-1900s. Though he passed away in 1965 at only 45 years old, his songs have remained iconic in the years since, with some of his most famous songs including “Smile,” “The Very Thought of You,” and “Unforgettable.” In addition to his music, he also hosted The Nat King Cole Show from 1956 to 1957 and appeared in several films and television shows.

What else is Colman Domino in?

Earlier today, Domingo was cast as Joe Jackson in the upcoming biopic Michael. Some of Domingo’s other notable roles over the years include Private Harold Green in Lincoln, Ralph Abernathy in Selma, Unicron in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and most recently, Bayard Rustin in Rustin.
