The trailer for Paddington in Peru, which has been dubbed Paddington 3, has dropped on June 12, revealing that the mother of the Brown family has been recast. While this replacement was announced last year, many were surprised to learn about it with the trailer and are wondering whether something happened to make Sally Hawkins quit the beloved movie franchise. Why did Paddington in Peru recast Sally Hawkins as Mary Brown?
Sally Hawkins is not in Paddington in Peru, aka Paddington 3, because she chose to step down and let another actress take over.
This is according to a statement she made with Variety back in June 2023, where she states that “for me, it has felt the right time to hand the reins over to another, and one can’t get much better than the truly wonderful Emily Mortimer, she is extraordinarily special. She will embody the essence of Mary Brown and yet make it utterly her own.”
While Hawkins says that she will “already greatly miss [her] on-and-off screen family,” she doesn’t go into any specific reasons why she left the role of Mrs. Brown. The actress is still filming movies, though. According to Deadline, Hawkins will star in the horror movie Bring Her Back by A24 and filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou. She also played Willy’s mother Mrs. Wonka in the movie Wonka directed by Paul King. It’s unclear if there would have scheduling conflicts in shooting these two projects alongside Paddington in Peru.
Paddington in Peru is set to release on November 8, 2024 and will see Paddington and the Brown family attempt to find Aunt Lucy, who has gone on a quest in the Amazon. We have yet to hear much from Mortimer yet on her role as the new Mary Brown, but now that the trailer has been revealed, we might hear more about her in interviews for the movie.
