On June 22, 2024, The Double, starring Wu Jinyan and Wang Xingyue, released its season finale (episode 40). As seen in the official trailer, Fang Fei (Wu Jinyan) rises from the ashes like a phoenix after her husband leaves her to die. Episode 40 focuses on Fang Fei and Duke Su (Wang Xingyue) facing the Longwu army led by Shen Yurong.
In the final episode, Xiao Heng comes face-to-face with Shen Yurong, who instructs his army to attack him. Xiao Heng, who stands bravely in the face of this adversity, is mocked by Yurong for being alone. To his surprise, Fang Fei soon joins Xiao Heng. She has come back to keep the promise she made to Xiao Heng that she would never leave his side. Xiao Heng urges her to go back, but she refuses. She announces that she will never regret sacrificing her life for her state, the Great Yan.
Yurong reveals that the royal family doesn’t care about them and will not remember the sacrifices made by them. He urges Fang Fei to kill Xiao Heng so they can once again live happily as a family. Fang Fei completely diminishes his proposal.
The Double episode 40: Does Wang Xingyue avenge his father?
Further in this episode, Fang Fei reveals that Lord Cheng has long retreated, leaving his people behind. On the other hand, the Longwu army has sacrificed itself to save the people of the city. She reveals the name of each soldier who has been martyred on the battlefield. Hearing the names of their fellow soldiers softens the army, and they lower their weapons.
Meanwhile, Situ leads the army of the Great Zhao to support Fang Fei and Xiao Heng. Yurong instructs the Longwu army under his command to fight them. Although the army initially refuses to comply, they are forced to obey him when he threatens them with the fish talisman.
Fang Fei targets Shen Yurong’s arm and shoots an arrow. Although she misses the first time, the second arrow successfully pierces through his palm, leading to him dropping the talisman. Xiao Heng retrieves the talisman and leads the Lonhwu army to the capital to fight the rebels.
Fang Fei visits dying Yurong in his last moments. She reveals that she does not hold any grudges against him anymore. She wishes for him to be reborn as a noble like he always wished. Yurong apologizes to her for causing so much pain. After Fang Fei leaves, he jumps off of the high tower to commit suicide.
How does The Double episode 40 end?
In episode 40 of The Double, the Longwu soldiers led by Xiao Heng finally enter the capital and thwart Lord Cheng from harming the Emperor. Consort Li sacrifices her life when she is used as a pawn to threaten the Emperor. Xiao Heng finally avenges his father’s death.
In the end, investigations reveal that Princess Wanning conspired with Lord Cheng and Zhao Sheng to usurp the throne. The court confiscates the Shen residence, the Jiang family kicks out Ye Mingyu and his family from the register, and Li Zhongnan and his sons receive the death penalty for treason.
Fang Fei’s father regains his sanity, and she reunites with her family. Furthermore, she marries Duke Su, her soulmate. Together, they visit Jiang Li’s tomb to pay respect. Fang Fei is content that she finally avenged Jiang Li. She bids a tearful farewell to Xiao Heng, who leaves for war.
Fang Fei finally reveals to Jiang Yuanbai that she is not the real Jiang Li. She also narrates how Jiang Li passed away. Yuanbai is grief-stricken to know the truth but urges Fang Fei to keep the secret from the rest of the family.
Fang Fei spends her days waiting for Duke Su and nurturing the cherry blossom trees she planted with her husband. Meanwhile, Xiao Heng loses his loyal companions on the battlefield. Even after enduring countless fatal blows, he stands against the enemy forces, ready to take them on. Will he be able to reunite with his beloved Fang Fei?
