In June 2001, a woman named Andrea Yates drowned her five children in the bathtub of her house in Clear Lake, Texas. Reports indicate that Yates killed her children after her husband, Rusty Yates, left for work. Subsequently, she told the police that she killed her children, after which law enforcement officials arrested her and charged her with capital murder. She pleaded not guilty to the charges because of insanity.

According to The New York Times, police officers found the dead bodies of Andrea and Rusty Yates’ four children on a bed under the sheet. Meanwhile, authorities discovered the body of the fifth child in the bathtub of their house. The publication reported that Rusty Yates was at work when Yates drowned her children. After killing her children, she called 911 and told the officers that she had drowned her kids. During the trial, Rusty testified that Yates called him on the day of the killings, saying that their children were hurt. Citing his statement, another The New York Times report mentioned that Yates’ mental health declined after the birth of their fourth child.

The defense tried proving that her deteriorating mental illness was the reason behind the crime. After hearing several witnesses, the jury deliberated for less than four hours and delivered a guilty verdict. CNN reported that Andrea Yates received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, in January 2005, the Texas First Court of Appeals reversed her conviction after a testimony by a medical expert. That year, the couple got officially divorced. Almost a year later, Rusty Yates married Laura Arnold in 2006 at the Clear Lake Church of Christ.

According to NBC News, Rusty Yates met Laura Arnold at the Clear Lake Church of Christ and decided to tie the knot. Citing the church minister, NBC News mentioned that Rusty chose to move forward in life instead of seeking revenge. Two years later, in 2008, the couple welcomed their first baby, reported ABC News.

As far as Andrea Yates is concerned, the accused went to trial for the second time in June 2006 and pleaded not guilty again. The trial continued for one month and concluded in July 2006 with a “not guilty” verdict. CNN reported that the court ordered her to go to a mental institution. In 2022, the court allowed her to have an annual hearing to determine her release from the mental facility. However, the outlet stated that Yates didn’t want a yearly review and wanted to continue her treatment.
