Kamala Harris: Did The Simpsons Predict Her as President? Explained

Many people are curious about whether The Simpsons predicted Kamala Harris as President. This theory gained traction after President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race recently. Kamala Harris then emerged as a leading Democratic candidate. The popular animated series, known for its seemingly accurate predictions, has fueled speculation regarding its foresight about Harris’s political future.

For those wondering whether The Simpsons predicted Kamala Harris as President, here is everything you need to know.

Did The Simpsons predict Kamala Harris as President?

Recent speculation about Kamala Harris potentially becoming President has surged due to a viral comparison of her to Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons.

In the March 2000 episode “Bart to the Future,” set in 2030, Lisa Simpson is depicted as “America’s first straight female president.” She inherits a budget crisis from President Donald Trump in the episode. Her purple suit and pearls resemble those worn by Kamala Harris during her 2021 vice-presidential inauguration.

This similarity has gained renewed attention following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Biden’s endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee has also contributed to this renewed focus. In a 2016 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer Dan Greaney described the episode’s storyline and Trump’s presidency prediction as a “warning to America.”

Al Jean, a longtime writer and showrunner for The Simpsons, recently shared a side-by-side photo of Lisa Simpson and Kamala Harris on social media. He highlighted the visual similarities, expressing pride in what some are calling a “prediction.” However, it’s more about the resemblance than any actual foresight into Harris’s potential presidency.

While The Simpsons has been noted for seemingly predicting events like Donald Trump’s presidency and the January 6 Capitol riot, the show’s creators appear to have downplayed the notion of actual prediction.

In an interview with CartoonBase, executive producer Matt Selman attributed the show’s predictions to a “basic understanding” of history and math. He stated, “If you study history, you [can] ‘predict’ the future because the foolishness of humanity repeats itself.” And with thousands of jokes over almost 800 episodes, it’s statistically impossible not to overlap with real-life events, Selman added.

Whether or not The Simpsons predicted Kamala Harris’s future, its impact and cultural significance are undeniable.
