Why Was Kylian Mbappe Substituted During Madrid vs. Atalanta?

Perennial champions Real Madrid finally overturned their fortunes in this season’s UEFA Champions League after they recorded their first away win in the competition vs Atalanta last night. However, their victory was marred by a minor concern in the form of Kylian Mbappe‘s injury. But what actually happened to the 2018 World Cup winner?

Here’s everything you need to know regarding the Frenchman’s latest ailment.

What happened to Kylian Mbappe?

Kylian Mbappe was substituted in the first half of Real Madrid’s 2-3 win vs Atalanta due to an injury in his left thigh.

The incident occurred in the 35th minute of the match when Mbappe started showing signs of physical discomfort. Despite not having clashed with any player on the pitch, manager Carlo Ancelotti decided to take the forward out mid-game.

Talking about Kylian Mbappe’s injury with Movistar, Ancelotti revealed, “[Mbappé] has a strain, some discomfort in his thigh. We’ll have to see. It doesn’t look serious, but I don’t know, we’ll see tomorrow. He couldn’t sprint. It was bothering him, so we had to substitute him,” as per ESPN. The former Paris Saint-Germain star was ultimately replaced by his Brazillian counterpart, Rodrygo.

Prior to his unexpected and injury-driven departure, Kylian Mbappe was proving to be a game-changer for his side. He opened the scoring with a sublime finish in the far corner, providing Real Madrid with a lead in the 10th minute itself. The strike also served as a personal achievement for Mbappe, as he became the fourth-fastest player to hit the 50-goal mark in the UCL.

Brahim Diaz, who provided the assist for Kylian Mbappe’s goal, later stated that he was unaware of his teammate’s present health condition. While conversing with Movistar, Diaz remarked, “I gave him a hug, but I have no idea [about his injury.] We hope it isn’t anything.”

From the looks of it, Kylian Mbappe’s injury does not seem to be a major one. Real Madrid fans can expect more clarity on the topic after the 25-year-old forward undergoes tests in the coming days.
