Nintendo Switch 2 preorders have been delayed in the U.S. due to new tariffs announced this week, the company said Friday.
Why have Nintendo Switch 2 preorders been delayed?
After officially showcasing the newest console this week, Nintendo also revealed that the Switch 2 — which is slated to release on June 5, 2025 — would see preorders go live on April 9, 2025.
However, in a recent statement (first reported by GameSpot), the company said that it would be delaying the preorder date for the U.S. due to the “potential impact of tariffs” that were recently handed down by the Trump administration following the announcement.
“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”
At the time of its announcement, the Nintendo Switch 2 was priced at $449.99 for the standard bundle and $500 for a bundle that includes Mario Kart World Tour. As of now, it’s unclear whether or not the tariffs will result in any price change for the console.
The tariffs recently imposed by the Trump administration have led many to wonder what could happen to prices on goods across the world. In a recent report, Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad noted that tariffs placed on Vietnam, where Nintendo had shifted production of the Switch 2 due to U.S. tariffs placed on China, could make Nintendo charge even more for the console.
Nintendo didn’t mention preorder delays for any other countries, so it does seem like the system will still go live to preorder for international audiences. Currently, various websites have already begun preparing placeholder sites for Nintendo Switch 2 preorders, including Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and GameStop.
