Longtime General Hospital fans have seen Lucky Spencer come and go over the years, but his latest leave feels more final. Played by the Emmy-winning Jonathan Jackson, Lucky’s recent return in August 2024 was celebrated as a meaningful, extended stay. However, as of next week, he’s once again preparing to leave Port Charles, and viewers are wondering why.
Is Jonathan Jackson’s Lucky Spencer leaving General Hospital?
Yes, Jonathan Jackson’s Lucky Spencer is leaving General Hospital after approximately a nine-month return. His exit follows an emotional arc where Lucky proposed to his ex-wife, Elizabeth Webber, played by Rebecca Herbst, only to be turned down.
Recently, Lucky took Liz by surprise when he proposed to her for marriage. However, she kindly declined and explained that while she still loves him, their lives are on different paths. Liz believes Port Charles is too small for Lucky, and staying would make him feel incomplete or dissatisfied.
In the next episode, Lucky questioned whether her rejection was temporary or final. He admitted the proposal may have been rushed, but insisted he was committed. Yet Liz stood firm, reminding him that she has roots in Port Charles like family, friends, and a career. Whereas, he wouldn’t feel fulfilled staying there. Ultimately, they agreed to part ways, knowing their love wouldn’t overcome their differing needs. Soon after, he thinks about how he will break the news that he’s going to leave soon to Aiden, who wouldn’t be hearing the same for the first time. But how he eventually informs Aiden about it will be revealed in the upcoming episodes.
While Jackson’s current run as Lucky Spencer is ending, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini left the door open for a future return. “We were so glad Jonathan was able to reprise the role of Lucky, even if it was for a limited time,” Valentini said. “We wish him nothing but the best, and the door is always open,” he added.
