Released in 2003, Elf, starring Will Ferrell, is a classic Christmas movie that remains on people’s lists every holiday season. Without a sequel in over two decades, fans have been wondering if Elf 2 is coming out. People began speculating about a 2025 sequel after a recent Facebook post went viral. But how true is that really?
Here’s what the post on Facebook said and what Ferrell said about Elf 2 in an interview.
Is Elf 2 coming out in 2025?
The Facebook post, created by YODA BBY ABY, is fan-made and is not from any official sources of the movie. Even the summary, “In December 2025, Elf 2 brings Will Ferrell back as Buddy the Elf, who partners with his sly former rival Miles Finch (Peter Dinklage) on a ‘Buddy the Elf’ toy line, only to uncover a shocking plot of surveillance devices hidden in the dolls, threatening Christmas and his reputation,” is fake.
This is just one of the many fan-made posts that readers can find on the user’s profiles.
Is Will Ferrell returning for Elf 2?
Given the success of the movie, fans often ask Ferrell about the sequel. During an interview with Josh Horowitz, Horowitz asked Ferrell if he has to frequently defend the decision of having no sequel.
Ferrell responded, “There was a lot of movement after the first film initially came out. An attempt was made at the script, which, you know, tried its best. But I was just like, I don’t know.” Ferrel continues, jokingly, “I was offered a crazy amount of money.”
Even back in 2013, in an interview with Rolling Stone, he was known for saying, “I just think it would look slightly pathetic if I tried to squeeze back in the elf tights. Buddy, the middle-aged elf.”
So, given all Ferrell’s statements in interviews, there are no plans to make Elf 2 starring him.
