Cate Blanchett & Robert Redford’s Truth to Open October 16

James Vanderbilt’s directorial debut stars Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford

Truth, the directorial debut by James Vanderbilt (ZodiacThe Amazing Spider-Man) starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, will get a limited release by Sony Pictures Classics in New York and L.A. on October 16 before expanding nationwide later.

The drama, based on Mary Mapes’ novel “Truth and Duty,” centers around the “Rathergate” created when the award-winning CBS News journalist Dan Rather (played by Redford) and Mapes, his producer (played by Blanchett), broke the story about U.S. President George W. Bush going AWOL from the National Guard for a year during the Vietnam War on 60 Minutes, shortly before the 2004 Presidential election. When it was discovered that they hadn’t properly authenticated the documents (which were forgeries), the ensuing scandal nearly took down CBS News, ruining Rather’s career and credibility in the process.

The movie co-stars Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss and Dennis Quaid.

Cate Blanchett won her second Oscar in 2014 for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, which was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.
