What’s at Marche du Film?
Running concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival this year is the Marché du Film (May 16 – 26), the place where deal-making is made, product is pimped and filmmakers vie for distribution. Twitch Film scoured its presentation list for fright material that you may see on your video store shelves (or in theaters) in the near future. Like all the necessary ingredients in some dietary “good living” pyramid, each film here represents a different sub-genre. You’ve got your bloodsucker flick, a zombie-ish tale, something a bit hairy and something for the splatter crowd.
Falling into that last category is Hack!. Here, a bunch of students head to Boris Island for a school trip where they are taken in by a hospitable couple played by Sean Kanan and Juliet Landau (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” The Toolbox Murders). However, this pair not only has a wicked streak running through them, but they’re cinephiles as well and they plan on making a “real” horror film…with the students as the leads. Writer-director Matt Flynn has filled his cast with other recognizable genre faces like Lochlyn Munro (Freddy vs. Jason), William Forsythe (The Devil’s Rejects), Burt Young (of the “Rocky” series and Amityville 3-D) and Kane Hodder (Hatchet).
Working our way over to the zombie film, Harry Basil’s Urban Decay finds Dean Cain (Dead and Deader) up against another undead menace, this one being an urban legend made flesh called “Pusshead.” Brooke Burns, Meat Loaf, Tim Thomerson and Duane Whitaker co-star. In The Last, actor Bill Beckwith feels the pressure from a vampire seeking some archaic object called “The Orb.” And, finally, werewolves run rampant on the East Coast in Lycan from filmmaker’s Gregory C. Parker and Christian Pindar. A shipping botch-up transports a captured werewolf from her natural environment in Germany to America where a bunch of blue collar pyro-technicians (?!) free the beast. Blood, CGI, lightning FX and one great closing shot abound in this film’s trailer – check it out by clicking on the title.
