Danny Boyles 28 Days Later is both one of the best contemporary zombie films, and the kickstarter of our contemporary zombie craze. That it also spawned a worthy sequel in 28 Weeks Later leaves no surprise theres still want for a third film in the saga, with hope original writer Alex Garland and original director Boyle might return.
Though discussed for years, another bout of 28 Months Later buzz is here. IGN spoke to Garland, currently promoting his upcoming feature directorial debut, the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, who said, Weve just started talking about it seriously. Weve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. Its complicated. Theres a whole bunch of reasons why its complicated, which are boring so I wont go into, but theres a possibility.
Regarding the potential films title, he added, Its more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.
Is there room in our oversaturated zombie landscape for another 28 film? What if its coming from the unique perspective of Boyle and Garland, who also penned Sunshine and Never Let Me Go. 28 Days is an often bleak affair, not mired in the sort of apocalypse look how cool this is wish fulfillment of many current undead films. Could the two aim to make them intense again? If so, yes.
