In 2014, we spoke about the arrival of major talents in light of films like The Babadook and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. This year, we can and should be doing the same for The Midnight Swim. A World Premiere at last summers Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, The Midnight Swim went on to hit the likes of AFI Fest in Los Angeles and more, bowling many over in the process. Candy Factory Films has acquired the feature debut from Sarah Adina Smith and announced a late June release. Its a must-see.
More a metaphysical drama than outright horror, but with proper creeps throughout, The Midnight Swim stars Lindsey Burdge, Jennifer Lafleur, Aleksa Palladino, Beth Grant and Ross Partridge. In the film, when their mother goes missing in Spirit Lake, three half-sisters (Burdge, Lafleur, Palladino) travel home to settle her affairs. The middle sister, June, a documentary filmmaker, captures their bittersweet homecoming. But when the sisters jokingly summon a local ghost, their relationship begins to unravel and they find themselves drawn deeper and deeper into the true mystery of the lake.
This is a beautiful, ethereal and wholly affecting film. Candy Factory will release via its new Electric Candy label this June 26th in theaters and on VOD. Please, mark your calendars.
