Fantastic Fest 2016 has revealed the second wave of programming for the festival, the 12th annual celebration of genre-twisting cinema. The Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas will once again host the festival from September 22 – 29, 2016.
“I’m proud of the creative tension we’ve asserted with this year’s program,” said Fantastic Fest founder Tim League. “Established, award-winning veterans are celebrated on the same stage as first-time filmmakers. This dynamic speaks to the strong diversity and rich body of talent that is challenging cinema today. It’s an honor to share their work with our global audience.”
Among the new announcements are the opening film of the fesitval, Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. In addition, legendary South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker) will attend the festival to present the US premiere of his new film, The Handmaiden. Plus the new Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Total Recall) film Elle will debut along with Paul Schrader’s Dog Eat Dog.
The festival will also feature female directors at the center of this year’s events with The Bad Batch from Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night), Toni Erdmann from Maren Ade, and Raw from Julia Ducournau.
