Don’t Breathe Tops the Labor Day Holiday Box Office

Sony’s Screen Gems and Stage 6 Films’ Don’t Breathe topped the weekend for a second straight time, dropping just 40.6% in ticket sales. The R-rated horror thriller earned $15.7 million from Friday to Sunday and is on track to take in $19.4 million for the four-day holiday weekend, which would put its domestic total at $54.8 million by Monday. From 3,051 locations, the film took in $4.18 million on Friday and $5.95 million on Saturday, and Sony is projecting $5.57 million for Sunday and $3.675 million for Monday. The film’s budget was under $10 million. Don’t Breathe was directed by Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang.

Warner Bros.‘ Suicide Squad remained in second place with $10 million for the three days for a total of $297.4 million after five weeks. The David Ayer-directed comic book adaptation is projected to earn $13.6 million for the four days, which puts it over the $300 million mark domestically. Internationally, Suicide Squad added $11.8 million to take its overseas total to $375.5 million and worldwide total to $672.9 million through Sunday. Made for $175 million, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara.

Walt Disney Pictures’ Pete’s Dragon actually moved up three spots from sixth to third with $6.5 million through Sunday and a projected $8.9 million over the four days. The film has now earned $64.2 million in North America (through Sunday) and $28.2 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $92.4 million. Made for $65 million, Pete’s Dragon was directed by David Lowery and stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford.

Dropping one spot to fourth, LAIKA and Focus Features’ Kubo and the Two Strings dipped just 17.6% from last weekend and added $6.5 million over the three days to take its three-week total to $34.3 million. Produced for about $60 million, the Travis Knight-directed film features the voices of Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Brenda Vaccaro.

Rounding out the top five was Sony’s Sausage Party, which grossed $5.3 million through Sunday and is projected to earn $6.7 million over the four-day holiday, which would put its domestic total at $89.8 million by Monday. Made for just $19 million, the R-rated animated comedy is voiced by Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Michael Cera, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Bill Hader, Anders Holm, Paul Rudd, and Danny McBride.

DreamWorks Pictures’ The Light Between Oceans (distributed domestically by Disney) opened in sixth place, but the drama earned just $4.98 million from 1,500 theaters over the three days and about $6.3 million through Monday. The film, which cost $20 million to make, received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences. Directed by Derek Cianfrance, The Light Between Oceans stars Michael Fassbender,  Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz.

That opening was still not as bad as 20th Century Fox’s Morgan, which absolutely bombed in 2,020 theaters with only $1.96 million, an average of just $970 per theater. For the four-day weekend, the R-rated film is expected to gross $2.4 million. Receiving a C+ CinemaScore, Morgan was directed by Luke Scott and stars Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leig, and Paul Giamatti.
