According to Deadline, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Jason Bourne, Ex Machina) is in talks to headline Freakshift, the latest genre-bender from filmmaker Ben Wheatley (High-Rise, Free Fire). The film is currently eyeing an August start date after Vikander completes her work as Lara Croft on the Tomb Raider reboot.
First announced in 2012, the action-thriller is set in a world where monsters rise from the ground and terrorize citizens when night falls. The Freakshift is a band of government-organized misfits and lawbreakers who hunt and kill the creatures for civic duty, sport and money.
Wheatley penned the script with Amy Jump. Andrew Starke will produce Freakshift via he and Wheatley’s Rook Films, with Riverstone Pictures and Film4 financing.
Wheatley recently attached himself to a big budget film version of Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s cult sci-fi comic book Hard Boiled, which would reunite him with High-Rise star Tom Hiddleston. Vikander already completed Wim Wenders’ Submergence opposite James McAvoy, as well as the sister drama Euphoria with Eva Green.
