Four years ago today, Disney‘s animated juggernaut Frozen arrived in theaters and would go on to gross over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office, catapulting itself to the fifth-highest grossing film of all time at the time (now the ninth-highest grossing film), the biggest animated movie of all time, and maintaining the highest opening weekend for a Thanksgiving release at $93.6 million its first five days. Since then, the film has become a cultural behemoth with toys continuing to sell out, short films set in the world of the film (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure is playing now in theaters with Coco), a ride based on the film in the Norway Pavilion in Epcot, Frozen characters appearing on ABC’s Once Upon a Time and in the “Disney On Ice” shows, and a Broadway version of the film on the way. In two years time, the long-awaited sequel will be released and this is everything we know about the movie.
Frozen 2 Confirmed
Following multiple denials, on March 12, 2015 the Frozen sequel was officially confirmed with directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck attached to return. Precious little else was announced about the film at the time, except for the animated short Frozen Fever, which was released attached to the live-action remake of Cinderella.
Ahead of the release of Frozen Fever, Josh Gad spoke to us about returning for the sequel, saying: “I think that the creative team is really taking their time to define how to top that story. The more I hear about it, the more excited I’m getting and I think it’s going to be wonderful.”
Frozen 2 Release Date
After the film was officially confirmed, Walt Disney Studios updated their release calendar a few weeks later and announced the film would be released on November 27, 2019, six years after the original film hit theaters.
Recording
The voice recording for the sequel began in September of 2017 with Idina Menzel returning as Elsa alongside Kristen Bell as Anna, Josh Gad as Olaf, and Jonathan Groff as Kristoff.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who won the Academy Award for best original song with the original’s “Let It Go,” were also confirmed to return to write the sequel’s music.
The Title
It remains to be seen just what the Frozen sequel will be titled when it hits theaters, but at the 2017 D23 Expo, it was announced that it would have a brand new title besides simply “Frozen 2.” It was also revealed the studio had toyed with the title being in the film’s native Norwegian, but upon translation those suggestions turned into Frozen To or Frozen Toe and the studio decided to move on. A featurette about the making of the film was also shown featuring the filmmakers’ recent research trip to Norway, Finland and Iceland for the sequel.
The New Characters
Little is still known about the film’s content, but in an interview with Cinema Blend, star Kristen Bell praised the project and teased the new characters fans would find in the film.
“I will say this. I have read it, I have recorded it. It changes every now and again. It’s VERY good,” the actress said. “I’m excited about the fact that Jen Lee, the director, and I had a very long conversation. So they had just taken their trip to Norway, the directors and the producers, and they basically just take the entire culture in. And make this big sort of fun home movie. [They] take all of those elements and say ‘What story needs to be told?’ And she is so genius. She had journaled, as the characters, for months to try and figure out [what they’d say]. She’s like, ‘What do we want to say?’ And then she’s just journaling as Elsa, just journaling as Anna. We sat down and she said ‘within this context, what do you think Anna would be feeling right now, in this stage of her life?’…One thing I will say, there are a couple new characters that you will fall in love with. That thing I feel like I can say safely.”
With that, that’s all folks. Walt Disney Studios remains mostly tight lipped about the Frozen 2 details, but with the film set to arrive two years from today, we can expect plenty of announcements in the coming years. What do you want to see happen in Frozen 2? Sound off in the comments below!
