Deadline reports that Tim Blake Nelson is set to join Gerard Butler in Angel Has Fallen. The film is the third installment of the Olympus Has Fallen franchise following 2016’s London Has Fallen and stars Butler as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning and Morgan Freeman as President Trumbull. The upcoming installment “follows Banning who is framed for the attempted assassination of President and must elude his own agency and the FBI as he tries to uncover the real threat.” Butler is also set to produce with Alan Siegel, John Thompson, Matt O’Toole, Les Weldon, and Yariv Lerner.
Details of Nelson’s character have not been released. He will star alongside the supporting cast, including Jada Pinkett Smith (Girls Trip), Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs), and Sapir Azulay (The Angel). It is being directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Snitch). The franchise clearly has a devoted fan base as the first film Olympus Has Fallen, directed by Antoine Fuqua, earned $170 million worldwide at the box office on a $70 million budget. London Has Fallen released three years following Olympus and managed to have a reported $60 million budget. It went on to earn over $200 million at the worldwide box office, which illustrates the love many audiences feel for these films.
Nelson is best known for his work alongside George Clooney in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Syriana. He recently appeared in the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the Anthony Mandler-directed drama Monster, which screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
