Hulu set to develop Demons series about the ‘satanic panic’ of the 1980s and ’90s

Hulu is set to develop a series about the “Satanic Panic” from the 1980s and 1990s, according to THRDemons is inspired by real-life events and will tell the story of Marilyn Jones, “the seductive ‘patient zero’ in the frenzy surrounding satanic ritual abuse, and her husband, Bennett Lewis, a brilliant but manipulative psychiatrist.” If the show goes forward, each season will reportedly deal with a different crime based around the couple.

Newcomer Juliet Lashinsky-Revene created and wrote Demons and will executive produce with Karyn Uhser and Lisa Zwerling from Carpool Entertainment. Amanda Tudesco will produce with Lionsgate at the studio. Lashinksy-Revene was a story consultant for Chris Terrio (Argo) and is set to direct the feature Inheritance from her first script.

During the 1980s and 1990s, “Satanic Panic” became a catch phrase for fears about satanic ritual abuse. It began with the McMartin Preschool incident where members of the McMartin family were charged with sexual abuse at their preschool in Manhattan Beach, California. There were no convictions, but the satanic ritual abuse allegations began a panic that similar things were happening all over the country.
