Saoirse Ronan is set to play the title role in the Michael Hirst-scripted historical biopic Mary, Queen of Scots, Deadline reports.
Crowned Queen of Scotland when she was less than a year old, the 16th century leader was, later in life, forced to abdicate her throne and was executed at age 44 for her alleged involvement with an assassination attempt on the life of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, whose life story was told in Hirst’s screenplays for Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. In the latter film, Mary herself was played by Samantha Morton.
There’s currently no director attached to the project, but producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are said to be on the hunt.
Ronan, meanwhile, recently appeared in Hanna and can soon be seen in Violet & Daisy, Byzantium and The Host.
