Jumanji Sequel Confirmed for Christmas 2019

Jumanji Sequel Confirmed for Christmas 2019, Dwayne Johnson Returning

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman confirmed tonight at CinemaCon that the upcoming sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will officially debut in theaters Christmas 2019! Rothman previously teased the studio was considering the release date for the film, which will position it directly in competition with Star Wars: Episode IX, as well as the long-awaited big screen adaptation of the musical Wicked.

Dwayne Johnson was also confirmed to return for the film, though it remains to be seen if co-stars Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan will be back.

The sequel to Welcome to the Jungle is already in development with writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner taking on the script, but no director is currently attached. Jake Kasdan (Orange County, Bad Teacher) directed the previous film.

To date, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has brought in $956 million worldwide, over 3.5x the worldwide gross of the original film from 1995, and recently became Sony’s highest-grossing domestic release of all time (just barely passing 2002’s Spider-Man). The film was #1 for four weekends, including three in a row and was the first December wide release to be #1 on a February weekend since Titanic in 1998. Globally, Welcome to the Jungle reached #1 in 76 territories and was #1 worldwide for four weekends in a row.
