Solo Leveling: Ragnarök is the sequel to the original series that has become popular recently. This is due to its anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures, which was released at the beginning of 2024. However, audiences have been confused over whether Solo Leveling: Ragnarök is a canonical event in the main storyline. The answer to this question is rather simple.
What happens in Solo Leveling Ragnarok?
The incidents of the Solo Leveling sequel take place five years after the events of the original series. Sung Jinwoo has a son with Cha Hae-In, naming him Sung Suho. During this time, as Suho begins manifesting his powers, his father decides to train him well.
Being a child prodigy with powers beyond his age, Suho struggled to connect with other kids. This compelled Jinwoo to seal his son’s powers and the memories connected to them so he could have a better childhood. However, his powers started to resurface by the time he was in high school. When it comes to strength, Suho’s powers are greater than that of the S-Ranked Hunters. Eventually, he becomes a part of the system as well, just like his father.
Solo Leveling: Ragnarök is similar to the prequel, despite having unique elements. The contrast between the two series arises in their respective protagonists. In Solo Leveling, Jinwoo begins his journey as the weakest hunter of humanity. However, in the sequel, his son, Suho is already at the top.
Moreover, Jinwoo and Suho have been in different circumstances, and their struggles are depicted in the same way. Although audiences might believe Jinwoo to be a more relatable character, Suho shares a similar experience. He, too, has to protect the people around him and face innumerable challenges along the way.
Is Solo Leveling Ragnarok canon?
Solo Leveling: Ragnarök is indeed canon to the original series. It was written by the same team who created the original series. Besides, the sequel maintains continuity by referring to several plot points from Solo Leveling. The ending contributes significantly to building up the sequel’s plot.
One more way to justify this is via Suho’s presence in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok. The prequel ends with Jinwoo attaining the position of the Shadow Monarch. As Jinwoo’s son, Suho would also have the powers that would make the S-Ranked Hunters inferior to him. In short, Suho appears as an extension of Jinwoo’s abilities in the sequel. Their struggles might not be the same in both the series, but they are quite alike in many ways.
There has not been any manhwa adaptation of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, which has led the majority to believe that it is not canon per se. This is available only as a web novel at the moment. Another reason could be due to Chugong’s presence in its making. Although he is behind the creation of the original Solo Leveling series, Chugong was involved in the sequel as a supervisor.
