After his 2022 retirement from the sport, tennis legend Roger Federer claimed in an interview that he is a “professional driver” for his four children. Now, a documentary, Federer: Twelve Final Days, chronicles his final days on the court. It offers an intimate look into Federer’s last pro tennis career days as he bids an emotional farewell. The documentary premiered on Amazon Prime Video on June 20, 2024.
Roger Federer played the last match of his record-breaking career in September 2022 at the O2 Arena in London. Al Jazeera reported that Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, teamed up with his on-court nemesis Rafael Nadal to play the doubles match at the Laver Cup. The duo participated as Team Europe and lost against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team World. The final match also marked Federer’s “beautiful” farewell.
Before his Federer: Twelve Final Days documentary premiere, Roger Federer opened up about his life after retirement. He claimed to have taken up a lot more dad responsibilities for his four children.
What is Roger Federer doing now?
According to CNN, in a September 2023 interview, Roger Federer claimed he is living a “beautiful, intense life.” The revelation came about a year after he retired from professional tennis. He also recalled his “beautiful” farewell at the September 2022 Laver Cup when he played his last match.
Roger Federer, during a sit-down interview with Jim Courier during the 2023 Laver Cup, remarked that he is now a “professional driver” for his children. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who has four children, said he has become “an organizer and a logistics man so it’s definitely a test on completely another level.”
Months later, before the Federer: Twelve Final Days premiere, the tennis legend disclosed more details about his life after retirement. Roger Federer told People Magazine that he has taken up dad duties, claiming, “Four children is a lot of work!”
Further discussing his and wife Mirka Federer’s children, he said, “We have twin boys that are 10, and twin girls that are almost 15.” Federer believes “it’s also a very vital time to be around them and to help them, guide them, and obviously let them also fly on their own, especially the girls.”
Roger Federer claimed he now gets “to wake up when the kids do” and helps them get ready for school. Federer stated he was working with his numerous brand ambassadorships, federation, and the latest documentary. He has now returned to his dad duties to reconnect with his children “over their sports and homework.”
Federer revealed that he and his family took a couple of vacations, including a trip to Lesotho with his children. Lesotho is reportedly a small South African country where his Roger Federer Foundation has been building schools.
Additionally, the retired tennis champion claimed they “went to a lot of concerts last year.” He extensively talked about attending Coldplay’s 2023 Zurich show when they got the chance to be on stage. He said they “also saw [Bruce] Springsteen twice, and Elton John.” Planning ahead, he spoke of their plans to attend Taylor Swift’s Switzerland concert and “ACDC too.”
Roger Federer stated that now he is “able to get into everything that everybody in the family does.” He said he “can jump in the water and try scuba diving,” unlike before when he “was like, I can’t, I need to rest. So retirement has been very, very good.”
Federer’s distinguished professional tennis career includes over 1,500 matches, 103 singles titles, and 20 Grand Slam titles.
Federer: Twelve Final Days premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and debuted on Prime Video on June 20. The Roger Federer documentary is now streaming on the platform.
