While this may be changing sometime in the future, it’s not surprising that a new Call of Duty is coming out this year. Regardless, Activision has confirmed that this year’s game will indeed be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and also spoke more about the overhauls coming to Warzone, both of which are being made in a new engine.
After rumblings and leaks spread within the community, Activision posted a lengthy blog post on the Call of Duty site about these two titles, confirming many of said leaks. The series’ schedule and a previous Video Games Chronicle report alleged that an Infinity Ward-developed Modern Warfare sequel was on the way, but this is the first time Activision has officially confirmed it. However, there is still no word on when more of the game will be shown and the post didn’t contain any gameplay details, either. The aforementioned report states that the game will have weapon jamming, a new morality system, overhauled AI, gore, and more and is also be centered around a drug war against Columbian cartels.

The official article also says that the next Modern Warfare and new Warzone have been “designed together from the ground-up.” Infinity Ward is also leading development on this new Warzone, which is getting a “massive evolution.” The post wasn’t specific, but it said to expect an “all-new playspace and a new sandbox mode.” It is implied but not fully confirmed that this would be a new game.
But that doesn’t mean the current Warzone is being left out to dry as the blog also contained many fixes and changes coming to the game that’s out now. It will have over 30 quality-of-life changes including changes to all forms of movement, having the gas mask animation no longer interrupt aiming down the sights, and letting newly inserted armor plates refill full plates before filling damaged ones. There are also a number of glitches like performance issues and visual bugs that will be addressed, too.

The post also spoke about how important communication was overall and then moved into player requests for an FOV slider. However, given how the feature can impact performance, the team won’t be implementing such a slider on consoles at this time. Not every community request is going to be filled, but they will at least be listened to and discussed internally.
