New PlayStation VR2 Pics Reveal Headset Design & More Features

Sony has been quite open about its upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. The virtual reality device has gotten its official name and first game reveal, but the headset’s design itself has been a mystery. However, it is a mystery no more as the company revealed the first PS VR2 pictures and spoke more about its features.

PS VR2 is an evolution of the first headset and looks like a natural evolution of it (it even has a headphone jack in the same spot), but it’s still taking inspiration from the PlayStation 5 itself, given its rounder shape. Sony also “paid very close attention” to the ergonomics of PS VR2 so that it was comfortable for a variety of people, even making it an overall lighter headset. It will have an adjustable headband, scope, and lens readjustment dial so players can move it to be easier on their eyes and head. The first headset was widely lauded for being more comfortable relative to the other virtual reality goggles of the time. Its even got an air vent to improve ventilation and prevent fogginess. Senior Art Director at SIE Yujin Morisawa spoke about why that is his favorite feature.

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow,” he said. “Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

Sony wrapped up the post by revealing that the front and back bands will also have thousands of PlayStation button symbols on them, much like the PS5 console itself and the DualSense. The company also ran down a list of previously revealed features — 4K resolution, HDR, enhanced tracking, headset feedback, a one-cord setup, the PS VR2 controllers — but did not reveal the price or any sort of release window. However, Sony said it still has more details to share in the future.
