The hand-crafted style of Cuphead calls back to the animation of old and the game has caught a lot of attention because of that novel approach. However, this takes a lot of time to replicate and is perhaps one of the biggest reasons why the Delicious Last Course DLC has taken years to come to fruition. While talking to IGN, Studio MDHR Executive Producer and Inking Artist Maja Moldenhauer revealed that the upcoming extra levels required the same amount of hand-drawn work as the entire base game.

It all started with the goal of making Ms. Chalice playable throughout the game and spun out from there. Eventually, the team wanted to bring back everything it initially put on the cutting room floor. This mission led to other time-intensive additions, like bosses that change locations throughout the fight. Other mechanics were similarly challenging to bring to life, but Moldenhauer wasn’t ready to talk about everything players can expect in the DLC.
Unless the devil himself intervenes, Cuphead‘s first and only DLC will be hitting Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam, and GOG on June 30. It includes new levels, weapons, charms, and giant bosses to conquer. Ms. Chalice is playable throughout the entire game for anyone who picks up the DLC, giving those original levels some added variety after a long wait.

Studio MDHR has been developing Cuphead since 2010, and Moldenhauer understandably shared the team’s eagerness to work on other projects.
“We have a lot of ideas in our head in terms of where we want to go, what we want to do. I will say that we love 2D animation. We love pencil to paper, but beyond that, it can go anywhere.”
Thankfully, Cuphead itself will likely continue beyond the realm of games, especially with its Netflix adaption still going strong.
