Is Madame Web in the MCU or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU)?

Given Sony and Disney’s cooperation lately, you may wonder if Madame Web is in the MCU, if it’s a part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, or both. The Spider-Man film rights have been one of the more confusing issues surrounding the rise of the MCU, but the character’s appearance in The Avengers films made it seem like Disney would be able to use him more freely. However, things have just gotten more muddled in recent years.

Madame Web isn’t part of the MCU. The only Sony productions considered to be part of the MCU are the Tom Holland trilogy (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home). None of the other Sony films, including the Tobey Macguire and Andrew Garfield movies, are part of the MCU.

If Madame Web hadn’t been a colossal flop, we might have seen some interest from Disney in using the character in the MCU. However, that’s highly unlikely to happen at this point.

Is Madame Web part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

Madame Web is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. However, it takes place long before the other films in the SSU, so there are no massive connections between it and the others. So, as of now, Madame Web exists in a shared universe with:

  • Venom
  • Venom: Let There Be Carnage
  • Morbius

Two more SSU films are scheduled for release later this year:

  • Venom: The Last Dance
  • Kraven the Hunter

Ironically, no Spider-Man films have been planned for the SSU. Given that two of the four movies released in the SSU have been failures, it’s entirely possible Sony may once again reboot their shared Spider-Man continuity, which would (mercifully) make Madame Web non-canon.

As it stands, we wouldn’t be surprised if Sony ignored Madame Web’s existence in future SSU productions.
