The C.S. Lewis Company announced in October 2018 that Netflix had acquired the rights to the Narnia books to develop potential films and TV shows. The production rights to a fourth Narnia film belonged to Entertainment One, which joined Netflix’s expanding project, with Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham, and Vincent Sieber serving as executive producers. In June 2019, it was reported that Matthew Aldrich had been brought in to be the creative architect of the franchise.
In July 2023, The New Yorker revealed that Greta Gerwig, fresh off the success of Barbie, would direct at “least the first two features” in Netflix’s Narnia franchise. That month, Gerwig told Total Film, “I don’t know. I haven’t even really started wrapping my arms around it. But I’m properly scared of it, which feels like a good place to start. I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, it’ll be like, ‘Okay. Maybe I shouldn’t do that one.’ No, I’m terrified of it. It’s extraordinary. And so we’ll see, I don’t know.”
It seems that Gerwig’s first film will be the inaugural project in the franchise, and the release date for that hasn’t been announced yet.
