Why was Vishnu against live-in relationships?

The plot revolves around Vishnu Trivedi, a local politician in Mathura. He is staunchly against live-in relationships, viewing them as a threat to Indian cultural values. His campaign against live-in relationships gains momentum. He starts protesting against his opposition, Bollywood star Nazeem Khan, who is rumored to be in such a relationship.

Amidst this backdrop, Rashmi, Vishnu’s daughter, starts an internship at a local news channel. There, she meets the channel’s star reporter, Guddu, and his best friend, cameraman Abbas Sheikh. Soon, Guddu and Rashmi started developing feelings for each other.

Guddu proposes to Rashmi, but she, hesitant about rushing into marriage, suggests a live-in relationship instead. Initially reluctant due to his traditional values and fear of Rashmi’s father, Guddu agrees to a trial live-in period during their 20-day business trip in Gwalior, a suggestion made by Abbas.

In Gwalior, they pretend to be married to secure an apartment in a conservative community. Their relationship deepens during this time, leading to intimate moments. However, their unconventional living arrangement raises suspicions among their neighbors, particularly Mrs. Srivastava, who becomes inquisitive about their marital status. To cover up, Guddu and Rashmi create a false story of their elopement, complete with fake wedding photographs.

Their ruse is almost exposed when Babulal, a relative of Guddu, spots them and mistakenly believes they have secretly married. He informs Guddu’s family, leading to a dramatic series of events where Guddu and Rashmi, fearing the repercussions, let their families believe they are indeed married.

The families return to Mathura, where Rashmi’s father, Vishnu, is overjoyed, believing his daughter has adhered to traditional values by choosing marriage over a live-in relationship. Guddu and Rashmi, while living together, struggle with the fact that their marriage is not legal and make several unsuccessful attempts to marry in secret.

Luka Chuppi ending: Were Guddu and Rashmi able to convince Vishnu?

In a climactic scene, their final attempt at a mass marriage ceremony is foiled when Vishnu, serving as the chief guest, catches them in the act. Confronted by the truth, Guddu and Rashmi confess to their live-in relationship. However, this revelation leads to a significant confrontation, where Guddu challenges Vishnu’s conservative views, arguing that his political failures result from his inability to understand and adapt to the modern values of the youth, the majority of the electorate.

Vishnu, persuaded by Guddu’s argument, accepts the changing societal norms and blesses the couple. Guddu and Rashmi finally get married with the acceptance and joy of their families.

The film concludes with Guddu and Rashmi covering a political rally where Vishnu, now allied with Nazeem Khan, campaigns more progressive and youth-oriented, signaling his adaptation to the changing times and the acceptance of modern relationships.
