Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai is a long-running anime alternatively known as Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories or Yami Shibai. Currently in its 12th season, the anime debuted on July 14, 2013. In the inaugural season, a storyteller wearing a yellow mask finds his captive audience in a group of children. Every week at 5 p.m., he appears on a playground to tell stories inspired by Japanese legends and traditions. As the series progresses, aspects of this narrative setting continuously change. For instance, in one season, the audience is made up of the Chinese Zodiac animals. In another, an apartment serves as the setting. However, the core storytelling device remains the same.

The official synopsis for Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai reads:

“Yamishibai is a picture-story style of animation whose motif is surrounded and based off the rumors, and urban legends throughout the history of Japan.”
