X-Men ’97 Episode 2 Ending Explained: What Happened?

Here’s the X-Men ’97 episode 2 ending explained featuring spoilers about what happened. Dive into our breakdown and learn about the fates of Storm and Jean Grey.

What happened at the end of X-Men ’97 Episode 2 with Jean?

Towards the end, Storm leaves the X-Men, while another Jean Grey arrives at the X mansion.

The story moved really fast in the first two episodes. With the world believing that Professor X was dead, Magneto was given the responsibility of leading the X-Men. But as he stood trial for his crimes against humanity, X-Cutioner attacked him with a radiation laser rifle.

While trying to save him, Storm jumped in and got hit by the blast, resulting in her losing her powers permanently. Angered by this attack, Magneto flew X-Cutioner and the UN commission members up in the sky. But instead of retaliating, he pleaded his case for another chance to turn Charles’ dream of mutant-human co-existence into reality.

As a result, he was pardoned for all his past crimes. The mutant nation of Genosha was welcomed into the United Nations. Meanwhile, Jean Grey gave birth to Scott’s son, Nathan ‘Charles’ Summers. He will grow up to become Cable, who has already appeared in the previous seasons of X-Men: The Animated Series.

But towards the end, Storm left the X-Men after finding out that she had lost her powers for good. Meanwhile, there’s a knock at the door and the cliffhanger ending reveals another Jean Grey on the doorstep. Everyone was shocked and confused to see a second Jean show up in need of the X-Men.

Whether this is a shape-shifter like Mystique (who is apparently still alive in the universe) or someone from the D’Bari or Skrull alien race remains to be seen.

Can Storm get her powers back after X-Men ’97 Episode 2?

While the damage done to Storm seems permanent, the effects of X-Cutioner’s rifle could likely be reversed.

The rifle fired a concentrated dose of the radiation used in the mutant inhibitor collars which affected Storm on a cellular level. But when Beast broke this news to Storm, Jean stated that they would find a way to fix this. So, it’s likely that the X-Men will come up with a solution for that in the future.

The team already lost Professor X and now, another Omega-level mutant has been depowered. But with Jean and Beast contacting the most comprehensive mutant research complex on Muir Island, it’s likely that a cure to reverse the rifle’s effects on Storm will be found.
