How Is Darth Maul Alive in New Series? Timeline & Setting Explained

Darth Maul’s return has once again stirred excitement and confusion among Star Wars fans. Long believed dead after his brutal duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Sith Lord is back in with Maul: Shadow Lord. The new animated series fills in a crucial gap in Maul’s story, explaining when this chapter takes place and how he managed to survive what looked like certain death.

When is Darth Maul series set in Star Wars timeline?

The first official trailer makes it clear that the Empire is tightening its grip. You see Clone troopers slowly turning into early stormtroopers, AT-ST walkers coming online, and that uneasy shift of power taking shape. All of it points to a time very close to the end of the Clone Wars, not the later eras like Solo or Rebels. At the same time, Maul is shown quietly building his pull in the criminal world.

Another big clue is the appearance of the Inquisitor known as the Sixth Brother, a character who doesn’t survive into the Rebels timeline. So, the story takes place right after Maul slips away from Ahsoka Tano at the end of the Clone Wars. However, it was before he evolved into the colder, more dangerous version of himself seen down the line.

Maul’s story doesn’t end with Obi-Wan cutting him down on Naboo. The Clone Wars later revealed that he had survived solely on sheer rage. His anger, hate, and pull toward the dark side kept him alive even after he was tossed aside like scrap and dumped on the junk world of Lotho Minor.

Stranded there for years, Maul completely fell apart. Alone and half-mad, he used the Force to weld bits of metal onto himself. His brother, Savage Oppress, found him and dragged him back to Dathomir.

That’s where Mother Talzin rebuilt Maul’s body and cleared his mind. His strength came back, but so did his burning obsession with revenge, especially when it came to Obi-Wan. That rebirth sent Maul down a darker, more dangerous road. It led to his takeover of the criminal underworld, his grip on Mandalore, and the creation of Crimson Dawn. Maul:
