Monster Mash crooner dead at 69
Various sources are reporting the loss of Bobby “Boris” Pickett. He passed away in Los Angeles Wednesday night at the age of 69 after battling leukemia.
Pickett, as so many horror and Halloween fans know, created the hit single “Monster Mash” – with his truly uncanny Boris Karloff impression – in 1962. The catchy tune devoured the competition at the number 1 spot on the Billboard chart that year the week before Halloween. The single, like any good ghoul, would return to the chart two more times in 1970 and again in ’73. Since then, “Monster Mash” has become synonymous with Halloween, livening up any party worth its salt and serving as the backdrop diddy for many costume parades (one of this writer’s fondest memories).
