An Audience Award winner at the 2013 Stanley Film Festival and favorite at Tribeca that same year, Ryan Spindells short film The Root of the Problem, about a devious dentist is online in full.
Director Spindell is coming off a big win at the 2015 Stanley Film Festival where the World Premiere of his latest short, The Babysitter Murders was received rapturously. For good reason, too: its terrific. Spindell has a real handle on gonzo tone. His work lives in a heightened horror-comics atmosphere, one laden with dark humor, but which never undercuts seriously macabre sensibility.
Thats all present in The Root of the Problem, a stylized work thats very fun, very capturing of the ever-present dental office anxiety, and pleasingly gross. The film is set In the candy-colored world of 1950s suburbia, where a reluctant housewife suspects that the friendly neighborhood dentist is hiding a horrible secret… but is it just the anesthesia, or is something more sinister hiding just below the surface?
