Salaar Ugramm Remake Rumors: Prashanth Neel Calls It a ‘Re-Telling’

Filmmaker Prashanth Neel, who created the KGF film series, is all set to entertain the masses with Salaar. The film stars Prabhas in the lead role and follows the story of two friends who later become enemies. Ever since the film’s trailer was out, there have been rumors that it is a remake of the 2014 Kannada-language movie Ugramm. While the film’s producer had earlier denied the claims, Neel recently broke his silence on the same.

Ugramm marked Prashanth Neel’s directorial debut. The film was an action drama that starred Srii Murali in the lead role. During a recent interview with Kairam Vaashi, Neel opened up about how his first directorial still resides in his heart.

He admitted that he wanted more people to watch Ugramm but could not achieve that. Prashanth Neel said, “Ugramm was made for theatres. It was made for the cinema halls and I always had that pain. Not to take away anything from KGF, the idea, the world building, it came to me from Ugramm itself. When Ugramm happened and I did not get what I wanted, I made a conscious decision that I am going to do something that will always fill the halls. And KGF did that for me.”

Is Salaar a remake of Ugramm?

Amid the rumors that Salaar is a remake of Ugramm, Prashanth Neel said that it is more of a re-telling of a story. In the same interview, he said, “But I had so many other subjects that I wanted to explore. And then I said no I have to make that movie because the world hasn’t seen it. I haven’t filled cinema halls for that subject and instead of calling it a remake of Ugramm, I wanted to retell that story. I wanted to fill cinema halls and I am doing that on the 22nd.”

The Salaar director continued, “Whatever people think, at the end of the day Ugramm is mine. It’s not a point that I am trying to prove. I want to fulfill one of my deepest ambitions of filling theatres for that particular subject and that is what Salaar is. I have changed a lot of things. I don’t care if people say, ‘This fellow cannot think beyond Ugramm and KGF.'”

Salaar will hit the theaters on December 22. It also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Jagapathi Babu in key roles.
