20th century 2010s
-
Akira (1988)
Set in 2019, Akira is one of the most seminal anime features ever. All kinds of cool bikes and plenty of futuristic settings are on full display here, and the animation is genuinely dazzling.
-
Back to the Future Part II (1989)
It seems like, back in the mid-2010s, there was a viral post every few weeks that claimed that “today’s the day Marty McFly traveled to in Back to the Future Part II!” The day, in fact, was in 2015—turns out, this movie might be the most accurate depiction of the future of the bunch.
-
Blade Runner (1982)
2019 looks really dirty to Ridley Scott and the rest of Blade Runner’s crew. It’s also android-infested, with the differences between humans and robots almost impossible to notice. Harrison Ford is an all-star, even if he looks a lot older in our 2019 than Blade Runner’s.
-
Escape from LA (1996)
John Carpenter’s Escape from LA might pale in comparison to Escape from New York, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to take a look at what he imagined 2013 to look like back in the late 90s. We still have Kurt Russell, thank God, so they at least got that part right.
-
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
2015 might’ve seen Mad Max: Fury Road catch up with the 80s movie franchise’s timeline, but it’s still worth noting that 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome took place in a futuristic, dusty, desolate 2012. (That means that Max went through quite the physical change over those three years, considering Tom Hardy took over the franchise from there.)
-
The Running Man (1987)
The Running Man is a dystopian sci-fi film from the late 20th century with a very pessimistic view of 2019. In this world, contestants of a murderous game show have to fight for survival live on-air.
