Exclusive: RZA’s Nobody Action Movie Playlist!
Universal Pictures provided ComingSoon.net with the chance to talk 1:1 with legendary actor/musician and Wu-Tang founder RZA for Ilya Naishuller’s action-thriller Nobody, now playing in theaters and arriving on VOD on April 16. In the film RZA plays Harry Mansell, the badass gun-toting brother of Bob Odenkirk’s Hutch Mansell. Since RZA is a devout action movie fan/director, we decided to ask him for his Nobody action movie playlist, and you can check out his mix below!
DIE HARD
I’m gonna go a little sideways, right? You can choose your Die Hard, but I think the first Die Hard is a great start to enter this whole world of Nobody. Heroes are stronger when they fight back from something. In Die Hard, when Bruce cut his feet, you felt it. Like, “Oh s**t, how are you gonna fight now?” Even the director’s idea to make him barefoot was already a crazy idea. This guy has to go through all this hell with no shoes? Then you look at Bob Odenkirk on that bus… getting thrown OFF that bus… and then when he got back on I was like, “Oh s**t.” My character getting shot in the movie was not in the script. The director came to me and said, “Yeah… we’re thinking of having you get shot.” I was like, “Yeah! It’s a gunfight, somebody’s gotta take something. We’re not invulnerable”
TANGO & CASH
I’m gonna throw in Tango & Cash! Because of all the one-liners. Russell & Stallone. It was cool, it was popcorn. It worked, right?
THE KILLER
Something obscure that you might not throw in the pot but you should throw in the pot to pick up on one of the pioneers of multiple, excessive guns… John Woo’s The Killer. [Which RZA has sampled on tracks.] If you can’t find a copy of The Killer you can go for his Hollywood remake which is Face/Off, which doesn’t have the same fun as The Killer.
JOHN WICK
You’ve got the part in Nobody where Hutch takes the family down to the basement and he locks them in and he comes up and he’s about to tear everybody up inside that house… it’s reminiscent of what John Wick laid down, but it’s upgraded because that stunt team has been so on fire with their craft. They started with a movie called The Raid 1 & 2 that was just another style of action. Before them it might have been Tony Jaa as the one who made you go, “Oh sh*t” with Ong Bok and those movies, but then John Wick brought it back in a dark way. But Nobody has the “wow” factor and the laugh-out-loud factor. Maybe it has to do with Bob coming from comedy, but it’s the villains too! When he walked into that hospital and threw that chair…
48 HOURS
You gotta throw 48 Hours in the pot. When you think about the black and white culture in films, it hasn’t been as developed as now where you have multiple stars like Jamie Foxx and Denzel and you can keep going down the list. As a kid I had Sidney Poitier or James Earle Jones, but they were never as relatable as Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours. When I was a kid I would go watch a kung-fu movie and it was usually a triple feature. Maybe I would stay to watch the first one twice because I love action. If it’s a regular Hollywood movie I watch it, I’m done and I go home. I saw 48 Hours in a theater, me and my brother, and we sat there and watched it again! That’s how good it was. That thing that really got my adrenaline going was when Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte got into a fight and the fight was kind of even, even though Nick Nolte got that last punch in. But when he walked into that bar… when he walked into that bar and did his thing I don’t think there were any big Hollywood films with that kind of a scene.
