Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen

Here are the Doctor Strange characters that we want to see on the big screen!

Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie is just scratching the surface of the allies and villains awaiting the MCU’s newest hero!

On November 4, Marvel is finally opening up the supernatural side of the MCU movies with Scott Derrickson‘s Doctor Strange. In terms of casting, Marvel hit another home run with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, as well as a supporting cast that includes Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and Benedict Wong. But if we have one complaint, it’s this: the Doctor Strange movie left out a lot of major characters from his rogue’s gallery and supporting cast.

Of course, if there’s a sequel, many of these characters could eventually show up. But it seems like a waste to sign Mikkelsen and McAdams and not have them portray major comic characters like Dormammu and Clea, respectively. Seriously, even the hardest of hardcore Marvel fans probably weren’t aware of Kaecilius, the character whom Mikkelsen is playing. That’s because he barely appeared in the comics for decades! When you think of great Doctor Strange villains, no one says Kaecilius!

Ahead of Stephen Strange’s silver screen debut, we’ve assembled a list characters that we want to see in any Doctor Strange sequels that materialize in Marvel’s Phase Four. By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, tell us which Doctor Strange characters you want to see in the comment section!

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Clea

If you’re looking for a strong and an interesting female character in the Doctor Strange franchise, look no further than Clea. Although Clea was initially Stephen Strange’s love interest and disciple, she gradually grew into an accomplished sorceress and became Strange’s partner in all ways. Clea even went on to become the ruler of the Dark Dimension, which is also the realm where she was born.

Clea hasn’t made many appearances in Marvel’s comic book universe within the last few years, but she is deeply tied to Strange’s history. It’s inconceivable that she’ll sit out of a sequel to this film.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Dormammu

Dormammu, or “the Dread Dormammu” is Strange’s personal nemesis, and the tyrant of the Dark Dimension who overthrew Clea’s father. Dormammu also happens to be her uncle as well. Dormammu’s powers have often pushed Strange to the limit, and he’s easily the best villain that Marvel ever gave its Sorcerer Supreme.

There are rumors that Dormammu is actually in the first Doctor Strange movie, but nothing has been confirmed yet. We may only get a glimpse of him this time. Have you noticed that Benjamin Bratt is in this movie… and Marvel still hasn’t revealed who he’s playing? Could he be Dormammu?

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Umar

Umar is Clea’s mother and she is also a deadly sorceress with power and ambition to rival her brother, Dormammu. If Clea and Dormammu make it to the big screen, then Umar can’t be far behind.

While Umar has often been portrayed as Dormammu’s ally, she has also attempted to rule the Dark Dimension herself. Her complicated relationship with Clea could also be interesting territory to explore in the MCU.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Nightmare

Nightmare is one of Doctor Strange’s earliest villains, and nearly on par with Dormammu as a worthy adversary. Nightmare is the ruler of the Dream Dimension, and he uses his powers to torment humanity through their dreams. Essentially, he was Marvel’s Freddy Krueger decades before Nightmare on Elm Street hit theaters.

What may be holding Nightmare back from the MCU is that he could be harder to justify in the live-action films. Remember, Marvel wouldn’t even call the Asgardians “gods.” They’re just aliens with science that we don’t understand. That approach would be harder to pull off with Nightmare. If he gets his shot in the sequels, we want a version of Nightmare that is true to the source material.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Shuma-Gorath

If it wasn’t for the Marvel vs. Capcom games, almost no one would know who Shuma-Gorath was! Perhaps he was chosen by Capcom because his bizarre appearance was well suited for the games. In Marvel’s comic book universe, Shuma-Gorath was an ancient god-like entity who played a key part in the storyline where Strange finally became Sorcerer Supreme. To stop Shuma-Gorath, Strange actually had to kill someone close to him. That’s a moment that has a lot of dramatic potential.

We doubt that the MCU would keep Shuma-Gorath’s exact appearance, but he (or it) would be a refreshing change of pace from the human-looking villains.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Silver Dagger

If magic was real, how do you think that a religious zealot would take it? In the ‘70s, Marvel introduced Silver Dagger, a former Catholic Church Cardinal who became obsessed with wiping out magic and anyone who used it. That meant making several attempts on Doctor Strange’s life, even though Strange used his powers for good.

Silver Dagger’s appearance is overdue for a modern upgrade, but he would give Strange a unique adversary for a movie. Silver Dagger isn’t necessarily evil, but he is misguided by his fanaticism. That could make for a very intriguing story.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Satana

Doctor Strange doesn’t have a lot of femme fatales in his rogue’s gallery, but there is one woman who stands out: Satana. She is literally Satan’s daughter (before that was eventually retconned by Marvel) and she has been both an ally and an adversary to Marvel’s supernatural characters.

Satana also played a key role in saving Strange’s life at the cost of her own… before she was eventually resurrected. Even after coming back from the dead, Satana still played both heroine and villainess. She’d be a perfect character to tempt Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange in future movies. After all, she is a succubus!

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Varnae

Marvel has its own version of Dracula, who has gone up against Dr. Strange a few times in the comics. But if the MCU wants to get a really imposing vampire, then it should introduce Varnae, the very first vampire in the Marvel Universe.

Varnae is not only a vampire, he is also a well versed sorcerer who could give Stephen Strange a run for his money. Plus, Varnae’s physical appearance could be very intimidating once he’s been given a modern makeover by Marvel.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want To See on the Big Screen: Topaz

While Clea is the natural first choice to serve as Strange’s apprentice, Topaz would be our backup choice. Topaz has a pretty wide range of powers to explore, including the ability to heal others and read minds. She doesn’t quite have the same close ties to Strange that Clea does, but her relationship with the good Doctor is more straightforward.

For reasons we don’t really understand, Marvel has portrayed Topaz as both a caucasian woman and an Indian woman. In this case, we’d like to see Topaz portrayed by an Indian actress.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Chthon

Among Doctor Strange villains, Chthon is one of the biggest of the big bads. He’s the elder god responsible for the Darkhold, the original book of dark magic that has unleashed supernatural threats for centuries. The new season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has actually mentioned the Darkhold, which suggests that Chthon could be used or referenced on that show. But we’d rather see him attempt to defeat Doctor Strange and attempt to return to Earth in a later sequel.

Doctor Strange Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen: Eternity

Have you ever wanted to ask the Universe a few questions? In some of the wilder Steve Ditko stories, Dr. Strange got his chance. Eternity is literally the embodiment of the universe. That might be a step too far for the Marvel movies, but we’d absolutely love to see those moments recreated in live-action.
