Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Biopic Set For 2021 Release

Elgort, Teller, Butler and Styles Eyed for Elvis in Baz Luhrmann’s Film

According to Deadline, Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick), Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Harry Styles (Dunkirk) are in contention for the lead role of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic. Oscar winner Tom Hanks (Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia) has already signed on to play Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis Presley’s manager.

All of the actors can sing, though neither bares much resemblance to the legendary singer. But after the success of the Queen and Elton John biopics, it feels only right to have a movie based on the King of Rock and Roll.

Parker discovered Presley when he was just an unknown and quickly moved in as his lone representation. Parker was responsible for various milestones, including Presley’s record deal with RCA and his successful acting career.

The currently untitled Elvis biopic will be co-written by Luhrmann, who will direct, and BAFTA winner Craig Pearce (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!). The outlet notes that the director is seeking out a newcomer to play the role of Presley and that the budget for the project is still being ironed out. Luhrmann hopes to get production started by next year.
